Non-Traditional Scholarships

A non-traditional student is defined as someone at least 25 years of age returning to pursue a post secondary degree.

Eligibility
Eligible applicants must reside in the greater Hamilton area and demonstrate financial need. Students may receive assistance to attend college on a full-time or part-time basis to obtain and/or complete an undergraduate degree. (Graduate students are not eligible unless stated otherwise in the scholarship description)

Previous recipients are encouraged to reapply, but are not guaranteed additional awards. Students receiving full reimbursement from an employer are NOT eligible.

Before applying for any of the scholarships listed, please read each description carefully for specific qualifications.

Brown-Latta Education Fund Scholarship
This fund was set up by Mrs. Robert (Beverly) Latta to grant financial aid to Butler County students who plan to continue or return to school. She was the daughter of Franklin P. and Dorothy Brown. Mrs. Latta received a B.A. degree from Ohio Wesleyan College and a master’s degree from Western Reserve. She married Robert Wilson Latta in 1950. Mr. and Mrs. Latta were the parents of one son, Douglas W. Latta. Mrs. Latta passed away on July 16, 1999, at age 73.

This scholarship is designated for an adult student with financial need who plans to continue or return to pursue an undergraduate degree with financial need. The grant may be used for tuition, books, and/or fees. Amounts of this award varies based on available funds and needs of the student.

Patricia Parrish Everhart Scholarship
Upon Patricia “Pat” Everhart’s retirement as scholarship coordinator from the Hamilton Community Foundation, this fund was established in her honor. Pat has been active with this organization as scholarship coordinator, as well as a general office volunteer, for more than 15 years. She continues to assist with scholarship work, as well as participating in other areas of the Foundation, such as the Women’s Fund and the Harry T. Wilks “Hamilton Celebrates Education” event.

Her community clubs include Hamilton Junior Women’s League, PEO, Chapter CL – a philanthropic educational organization – Trouveres and Browning Club. Pat is married to Paul Everhart and the mother of two sons, Mark Banks of Petrosky, Michigan, Brad Everhart of Birmington, Michigan, and three step children, Connie, Ginny and Becky.

This scholarship is designated for an adult student who plans to continue or return to school and has financial need. Amounts of this award varies based on available funds and needs of the student

Hamilton Rotary Scholarship
The Hamilton Rotary Scholarship is designated for an adult student who plans to continue or return to school and has financial need. This is a one year $1,500 scholarship for tuition assistance.

Marie Iutzi Memorial Scholarship
Upon Ms. Iutzi’s passing in January of 2001, this scholarship fund was established to support students in pursing their educational goals. Ms. Iutzi was educated in the Hamilton public schools and was employed as a buyer for the Robinson Schwin Company and Mabley and Crew Company. Amounts of this award varies based on available funds and needs of the student.

James A Johnson Memorial Scholarship
Upon Mr. Johnson’s passing, friends established this scholarship fund in his memory. This is to be an annual scholarship for a non-traditional Butler County student attending an accredited college or university. The scholarship is based on financial need, future goals and maintaining a 3.0 GPA. Mr. Johnson started work at Richard’s Pizza at the age of 16 and stayed with this family business for 23 years, serving as Operations Manager over all four locations at the time of his death on March 14, 2002, at age 39. Amounts of this award varies based on available funds and needs of the student.

Metropolitan Women’s Club Scholarship
This scholarship is to support a student who has completed some college courses and is a resident of Butler County, excluding Middletown and Oxford. Financial need is also a deciding factor. Amounts of this award varies based on available funds and needs of the student.

Robert Rathgens Memorial Scholarship
A native Hamiltonian, Mr. Rathgens served in the Navy during World War II. He was employed as an electrician at Wente Electrical Construction for 29 years. He was married to Gertrude Blanton, who preceded him in death in 1995. At the age of 89, Mr. Rathgens passed away on April 10, 2003.

This fund was established upon the death of Mr. Rathgens for the purpose of providing scholarships for students who could not afford to attend college. Amounts of this award varies based on available funds and needs of the student.

John A. Shafer Nursing Scholarships
This fund honors Mr. Shafer’s lifelong commitment to helping students reach their educational goals by offering a scholarship to a young man or woman who wants to pursue a career in nursing. Mr. Shafer was the former President and owner of Shafer Implement Company. His family is most proud of his dedication to helping students through scholarships he set up through the Miami University Fund and the Hamilton Community Foundation.

The John A. Shafer Nursing Scholarship supports a student who plans to continue or return to school to pursue their nursing degree and has financial need. Amounts of this award varies based on available funds and needs of the student.

Hamilton Professional Firefighters Association, IAFF Local 20
This is a scholarship for a student who has a 3.0 GPA and is involved in the community.
Financial need is not a consideration for this one year $500 award.

Patricia Kloth Memorial Scholarship Fund
Upon Ms. Kloth’s passing in August of 2006, this scholarship fund was established by family and friends to support students in pursing a nursing degree. This scholarship awards a one time $500 award.
