Dorothy and Allan Bailey

Hamilton High School graduate, Dorothy Limerick Bailey has deep roots in the community dating back to the 1800s and Allan is a first generation British American. Through a series of events in their lives, they finally came together at a Presbyterian Church youth social planning session.
According to Dorothy, Allan put her charge of public relations for their first event and then decided to put himself on her committee. “He is such a romantic,” said Dorothy.
“When I first saw Dorothy, I knew I had to meet her and this was one way to get to know her. I thought I am going to marry her and I began right away working toward that goal,” said Allan. This special relationship began in the September of 1960 and has continued for 52 years.
Through the years, the Baileys raised two daughters, Ruth and Victoria, had successful careers and now are enjoying retirement and giving to their community. Dorothy graduated from Ohio University with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and worked as a corporate research chemist for Procter & Gamble for 41 years. Allan served in the navy for six years, came home to start his career at Whirlpool in Hamilton and then moved on to various management positions at Cincinnati Bell where he retired after 30 years of service.
“We have known about the Hamilton Community Foundation for awhile and always intended to start a fund,” said Allan. “I realized I had to incorporate the discipline I had learned from my life at work and just get it done. Through giving from our IRA, it allowed us the opportunity to set up our monthly giving and now it just happens and I don’t think about it any longer. The Foundation handles the administrative work and we just get to enjoy “automatic” giving to support our Greenwood Cemetery Fund, the Helen Limerick Memorial Scholarship fund and the Ruth Alice and Walter Thomas Limerick Scholarship Fund” said Allan.
